Why the permit has to move
A stay permit is recorded against a specific passport. When a new passport is issued, the permit details still point to the old one until they are transferred, which in practice is often called a "switch stamp".
Steps in order
A transfer goes smoothly when the steps happen in this order:
- Get the new passport from your embassy or consulate.
- Send the new passport details to your sponsor or agent straight away.
- Keep the old passport. If it was lost, keep the police report.
- Let the transfer be filed with Immigration.
- Include family members whose permits depend on yours.
Plan travel around it
We recommend avoiding international travel until the transfer is complete, because the permit on record is still tied to the old passport. Share your travel dates early and we will schedule the transfer around them.
